Barcelona is in the midst of a rebuilding project that has been in the works for a long time. As a result, it should come as no surprise that if one of the present players is replaced with a better player, the club will seek to terminate its contract. Memphis Depay is an example of such a player. According to Javi Miguel, if Barcelona is successful in acquiring a top forward such as Erling Haaland during the summer transfer window, the Dutchman would quit the club.
Depay has had a difficult start to the season with Barcelona thus far. The Dutchman has failed to find the net at a pace that is as consistent as he would have liked. Some of this may be due to a lack of confidence on his part, but his finishing is the most significant issue that he and the squad are dealing with.
However, despite these setbacks, he has eight La Liga goals to his credit and is, even while injured, Barcelona's leading scorer by a considerable margin. Similarly, if someone like Haaland came to the team, he would not be given a spot on the squad. Ansu Fati, maybe Ousmane Dembele, and Ferran Torres would occupy the wings in this scenario, among others.
If the Blaugrana are unable to sell him, they may resort to using him as a stand-in. Prior to Depay's arrival, it was stated that he was willing to play a supporting role. With this in mind, he can be considered as a second option moving ahead. It remains to be seen what will transpire between now and the summer of 2019.
