Nigeria Football News: Super Eagle coach Rohr shuts door on Serie A goal machine and More

The German strategist has plenty of options in the Super Eagles attack, but he will not call up the country's all-time leading scorer in the Italian top division.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has stated that it will be tough for Salernitana attacker Simy Nwankwo to return to the national squad in the near future.

Simy was Crotone's standout striker for almost five years, hitting 20 goals in the Italian Serie A previous season before joining Serie A newcomers Salernitana this summer.

However, he is yet to make an impact at his new club, and his inability to find the back of the goal after three league games may have put a stop to his national team ambitions.

Compatriots Iheanacho, Osimehn, and Moffi have also been in terrific form this season, which hasn't helped him.

There's also Awoniyi, who has struggled to break into the national squad despite his great play with Union Berlin this season.

Rohr acknowledges Simy's efforts but feels the 29-year-old still has a lot to prove before being called up.

The Nigerian superstar Simy is just another player at the center of  the super eagle squad scouting, but we have several high-profile attackers in the Nigeria squad, said Nigeria head coach Rohr

There is a lot of rivalry for the position of center forward in the Nigeria current squad, and it will be very difficult for Simy to carve out space, he continued.

In May 2018, the Onitsha-born striker made his Super Eagles debut in a friendly against Congo DRC. He was also included in the 2018 World Cup squad.

However, he has not played for Nigeria since the 2-1 loss to Argentina in the 2018 World Cup.
